Prayer

Praying

It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.

— Mary Oliver, Thirst

However you pray whether it is repeating words from a holy book or holding a smooth stone at the water’s edge, prayer involves putting your heart forward to give and receive. This universal practice has measurable effects on blood pressure and heart rate but also immeasurable effects on mood and one’s sense of hope and a practical avenue to living in gratitude. This not only impacts our own selves but also those around us.

Consider taking a moment for a prayer this week.
